I found myself nearly choking on the flatbread pizza that Prevue’s co-owner, Dave, served me because I could no longer contain my laughter. The champions of the Improv comedy competition took the stage one last time and the entire place stood and cheered.
My friends and I find ourselves at North Davidson’s Prevue from time to time. Many of these times the first people we see walk in mistakenly think they entered the entrance to Alive—a connected multi-purpose building. The atmosphere within Prevue is relaxed. Local artists like Mike Gates grace the walls with vibrant paintings diners enjoy and can purchase that evening. The walls are not the focal point of the pizza/bar food restaurant/bar though—it’s the stage. A stage that often holds local musicians or on Saturday night held a cast of wily comedians called Charlotte Comedy Theater. About a dozen or so comedians split into teams and performed competitively with the audience as their judges.
Prevue’s small venue was full and the table and booth setting worked well with the audience-involved performance. With team names like Gay Black Jew—the teams poked fun at every taboo topic with help from crowd suggestions. I nibbled on a chicken and spinach flatbread pizza and a Miller Lite while I listened to the comics crack up not only the room but also fellow performers.
The comics ranged in age but all looked to be in about their 20s or 30s and were able to connect with the audience immediately.
While Prevue’s menu is not extensive, it is tasty. Dave Ladish not only manages the place, but also cooks and serves drinks to bar-goers and diners. I found it to be a fun place to relax without the usual sardine-in-a-can feel you usually feel on the weekends in NoDa bars.
If you missed out on the Improv comedy this week, don’t worry you have time to catch them. The Charlotte Comedy Theater will be performing at Prevue located at 2909 North Davidson here in Charlotte right after the holiday on Friday, January 1st and Saturday, January 2nd. The cost at the door is $10 and I believe the show fits the bill. The performance starts at 8pm but get there early and you might find a piece of artwork you want to garnish your walls for the New Year.
